Re: Heather Watson
Disappointing. The kind of ranked played you'd like to see her beating at this stage in her career.

yes a bit gutting to lose so heavily but then Heather is on the learning curve.

After all, she was playing a higher ranked opponent.

Re: Heather Watson
Yes IMHO the important result was the easy victory against the Japanese girl ranked 102 v. Heather's 100.
If Heather starts winning the majority of matches of those ranked around her at present i.e. around 100, she will start to head for a ranking of say 75 which she can build on next year. Remember her initial target this year was top 100 which she revised to around 70, based on achieving that earlier that expected.
More experienced observers of women's tennis will know better, but this year I have realised that it is a big advantage to qualify directly for the GSs and be successful in winnable matches i.e. if you do not draw one of the top players, because pointswise that it is really important. So I hope she gets a good draw at the USO next week!
Most importantly, Heather may turn out to be a fine tennis player, but she is clearly not the rising star that Andy was so I am not expecting her to shoot up the rankings, but I think a bit of experience will help her to become a higher ranked player than the Ballys and Annes of the world. How high time will tell but I am sure she herself will feel positive about the year so far.

Re: Heather Watson
Well said David, a few good draws will certainly benefit Heather in moving up the rankings. In general players such as Cetkovska are a level above at the moment, even if she could have performed better. Heather though did beat Wozniak in Birmingham who was ranked 48 at the time.

Well, Shriekapova does somethimes start slowly in these tournaments - so "Come on Heather"! Show her how well you can play and you never know what might happen

Re: Heather Watson
Awful draw.
Was hoping for a winnable first round. But at least she will be on a massive court and can try to soak up the atmosphere for future years.

Re: Heather Watson
Tough ask for Heather. She must just use this to find out just where she really is with her game and what she has to do to improve so that she can move up through the rankings - hope she goes into the match determined to get some positives out of it.

Tough draw for Heather but this is bound to happen. Hope she is not too over-awed and just goes out and plays well.

Re: Heather Watson
Oh well, pity. At this stage of her career there are bread-and-butter matches to be won to get points to hang around the top 100, "fifty-fifty" matches where she is playing winnable but also losable matches, and matches like this which, whilst we can hope and dream, are realistically about getting experience of playing big players on big courts.
Remember Laura took her to 7-5 in the first set at Wimbledon and though Sharapova has improved a lot this year, her serve can still misfire, so here's hoping Heather approaches it in the right way (and gives Laura a call!).
Enjoy it Heather!

Good article on Heather in the mail. She has a full time coach now.

Pleased to see she has a full time coach now, hopefully they can build a strong partnership.

Watson sounds happy when we talk – as she always does – and is full of enthusiasm about the changes in her life, including her new coach, former world No 78 Mauricio Hadad from Colombia – Sharapova’s former mentor.
‘Mauricio is my new coach. He's based half of the time Florida and half in Colombia, where he has an academy. I’ve known him since I came to the Bollettieri Academy when I was 12. I used to have private lessons with him. But he left after three years. But I called him to see if he wanted to work with me
'We started about six weeks ago. He’s very calm. I don’t work well with people who scream in my face because I won’t listen. He’s very smart. And he’s going to come to England to train with me after the US Open. He’s teaching me some Spanish – so he speaks it to me all the time. I’m getting a lot better.’
Pleased to see she has a full time coach now, hopefully they can build a strong partnership.

Re: Heather Watson
Will be interesting as Robbo played her at Wimby, woulda taken at least the first set if I recall if she hadn't bottled it. But then they are very different players, robbo's got the weapons, but Hev has the head.

Sharapova is playing pretty much near her best now (she won in Cincinatti), so it's a bad time to run into her.
I hoping Heather can at least get into the match. 63 63 would be a reasonable result.

Now saying "this match may be moved" alongside the match on tomorrows oop.
That would be a shame.

I was up on Murray Mound watching that match on the mega screen and just willing Laura to win it.
