Did anyone else notice what happened at the net after the handshake?
It looked as though Robin said something to Andy and Muzzah took a step back. It didn't look all that friendly but am sure it was fine.

Me neither; I think they've done a technical error and not moved the match off livescrore and onto archive.

They didn't just talk over it, the stream I was on had the match stats board up right across the screen so I couldn't see Muzzah!!!

    21 Aces for Murray!
Don't want to do any post-match stuff now but first set Andy had poor first serve percentage and was winning only 33% of second service points. The aces do not compensate for the overall low first serve percentage. Throw in a few doubles and Andy's serve is too vulnerable for a top player. He covers it up by tending to get two breaks to one in a typical set, but the hard statistical truth is the present serve, aces not withstanding, is too breakable except on "special" days. He needs to change it. Or at least place more first serves, particularly when being creamed on second serve by somebody much lower in the rankings.

But so be it. Perhaps Andy will feel charmed after that and the nerves will be gone the rest of the tourney! Smile

Haase challenged the last point, so Andy had to wait before he could shake hands. I think that's all it was.

My understanding was they "finished" the match with the handshake then realised the challenge process had not finished....

Quote from Andy via BBC live match report...
"I wasn't playing well, I was moving really poorly," says Andy Murray. "I moved better towards the end of the third set, I was more comfortable. In the fifth set I had a few bad points at 4-0 but he was coming up with winners, hitting lines. Towards the end it was much better - I was hitting clean, staying focused, keeping my energy in points, not using it up between points. I need to start well next match [against Feliciano Lopez] - if I don't, there will be trouble. It will be a tough match and if I play like today I might be going home, so I need to up my game."

OMG - came home thinking I would watch the recording of a fairly easy win for Andy to find the fifth set just beginning. I don't know how you folks sat through that -I would have been a nervous wreck. Hat's off to Andy and to all his fans for his and their tenacity!

Wow! What a win! Is like Andy saw Nadal's 5 setter at Wimbledon against Robin and decided to make it even tougher Wink

One of the scariest matches I have watched! I really thought I had predicted andy's comeback win (after Andy's comeback against gasquet I realised that you can never say never with Andy) but got really nervous in the 2nd half of the 5th set.

Still it was a win and a well fought win! Robin is no easy player. Definitely take that! Really hope he improves over Deliciano! We have faith!

This match was so mentally exhausting for me. Cried after Andy won. It was so tough!

Hope he ups his game against Feliciano and does it in straights.

Thanks for that. I was dancing around the room at the end!Weird thing was husband came in at the end of second set, looked at me in my Andy Murray t clutching a glass of wine and said "Don't know why you panic, he'll win in five". With that he took his meds, his book and went to bed. Go figure the man. Must say at end of match bless him he came down and said ....you all know what he said. Starts with " I told..." Was at a family dinner at someone else's house and one of the guests kindly checked the score after dinner and we all had a good discussion about Andy's game. So relieved he came through. Brad's wife held the faith apparently.

Firstly - I want to run over the two scraggy moggies yowling in front of my window at 4:45 am.
Then I want to get new double glazing to block out the sound!

Good to see he won - just couldn't stay awake and I put myself before our favourite nutcase rollercoaster!!!

This match was woeful with stats - win ugly. He will really have to come out firing against Deliciano - he was dominant against him at Wimbledon and he will need to be in that frame of mind again.

His errant forehand for the first two steps was a real worry ...
I assume he will be playing on Sunday so may/may not catch him Crying or Very sad

Well done, Andy! Phew!!! It's one of those matches I would have really enjoyed if I wasn't so darned partisan!

Mike Bushel on the Beeb just said that this win puts Andy back to number 3 in the world rankings. Surely that's wishful thinking? Mind you, Bushel's review of the match leads me to suspect he went to bed after England vs Bulgaria. Other than the result, it bore no resemblance to what actually happened. Can't Chris Hollins work 7 days?

Oh I was only half listening to him - as I too prefer Chris.
He can be a little wide of the mark and only reports the sport as a preamble to whatever "Mike Bushell" adventure they are promo-ing for the day!

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW

Firstly - thank you to Jaydu and Guerkins for the heads up on the Sky red button - phew!! So I had to leave here to go off and watch.

Got up this morning and came here just to check I hadn't dreamt the win and I hadn't cheers cheers cheers

Can't remember ever seeing Andy play so poorly as he did in the latter part of the first set and the whole of the second. Even when he's been beaten by much lower ranked players it's usually because the oppo has played lights out tennis. Not so on this occasion, as Peter Fleming (bless him) kept saying. He emphasised throughout that Andy was the class player and better than Haase and that Haases wasn't even playing particularly great tennis (apart from the odd shot here and there and especially at the end of the 5th).

BUT.........Andy got the win. Yes - over 5 sets, maybe not great in the early stages of a slam.........but not so bad either IMHO. Several positives to say about it.

1.Andy lost because he was playing badly and he knows the reason - movement - so he can improve. He doesn't usually have such problems with his movement (although I have noticed him bashing his feet in the last few tournies and I felt he wasn't happy with his body). So hopefully this was a one off and out of the way early against an oppo who couldn't get one over on him because of it.
    2. The 5 set match wasn't that long in terms of stamina. Only 3.5 hours - you can get 3 set matches that long. Nothing like the Monfils v Ferrero marathon.
    3. He realised in the 5th (as he said in the interview) that he needed to conserve energy between points and it was VERY noticeable that he didn't spend that time muttering to himself (unlike the second set).
    4. He has reminded himself that he has the physical and mental toughness to win from way behind and that it's never over till it's over.
    5. He's had a close call i.e. almost on his way home - that may just relax him a bit and allow him to play more freely because in a sense any match after this close call is a bonus rather than a barrier.

    So GOOOOOOOOOOO ANDEEEEEEEEEEEE against Floppy!

Peter Fleming made the point that often players have one bad match on the way to a Grand Slam title and maybe this was Andy's. Certainly, Rafa had a scary match against Isner at the French and Novak got a real fright against Bagdhatis at Wimbledon, so maybe we can take this as a good omen!

Just rememebered it was Haase that took Rafa to 5 sets in the second round of Wimbledon last year - definitely a good omen!
