Serena called out before a point was finished and the game was given to Sam. Serena then turned on the umpire and the crowd got behind her and it's all turned ugly. Once again. Sam Stosur deserves better than this. It wasn't her fault classless Serena called out at an inappropriate time. I only hope it doesn't put her off her game.

Me neither. So glad Serena didn't wrest it away from her. She totally deserved to win. Grace under pressure and oozing class unlike her opponent.

Well done Sam!!! I've always had a soft spot for her and plus she had the best dress out of any of the ladies.

Sam was awesome, a tremendous performance from her and so glad she won a slam, a pity some of the headlnes will be about the controversy of course! I was beginning to think Sam' chances may have gone after her relatively poor performances in the other slams this year. Sometimes she had appeared to lack the belief, though of course she has many weapons when all is going well. I think very few would have forecast this. I thought that if Serena got to the latrter stages she would be pretty hard to stop. She obviously felt the tension today but her behaviour was totally inexcusable. Mary Carillo though didn't really press her in the on court interview.

I think one of the reasons Sammy beat Serena is coz she has a fab serve unlike so many of the other WTA players. She had some lovely sharp clean winners. And Serena was flat and off her game today.

So proud of Sam Stosur. Glad she's not a shrieker, too.

    Has Serena violated her probation?

Brilliant win for Sam Stosur - I didn't see that coming! In fact I didn't even bother to check up on the score - just assumed Serena would win.
Really pleased Well done Sam cheers cheers cheers

There's yet another point in her favour: she doesn't shriek. Well done to Australia for creating yet another classy champ (Pat Rafter is my all-time fave male player).

And correctly so. That is not the time or place to discuss it. Her response would have taken away from Stosur's victory speech.

    Sounds painful!!!

Apparently her probation ended when this tourney started - according to yesterday's post-match presser.

And Serena has been fined for her behaviour.

    The princely sum of $2,000.

They might as well not have bothered! Or maybe deducted it off the $1.4m that she was given as prize money yesterday..

Agree Super8 $2000 is a drop in the ocean to Serena and hardly a sanction, wonder what te umpire makes of it all! Apparently the outburst wasn't considered a serious offence.

Jon Wertheim (Sports Illustrated) called her "an ill-tempered and self-delusional bully". Making her only pay a piddly amount means nothing. She knows she can get away with being such an eejit and so will probably continue to do so. Sad. And what does it tell you about the worth of the umpires and linespeople? No wonder half of them were on strike - they should ALL go on strike and then the players would sit up and take note.

I was absolutely disgusted with Serena. You get the impression that she thinks she is above the game and rules do not apply to her. She broke a rule and was penalised but then ranted and was so abusive to the umpire. Her fine is derisory and a cop-out by the authorities. I think she is a bully. So glad that Sam was not affected by it, or at least, didn't show it. Well done on your first Major title. You were by far the better player and the lady with more class!!
