Thanks Cazza. I suppose we just have to wait and see if indeed Andy will play this one.

Yes but it wouldn't shock me if he withdrew, he was pretty done in last weekend.

But wouldn't he have to attend to do promotional duties or lose ranking points?

My guess is that he will go but may not put his all into it and get knocked out early.

Mind you if he does skip Bangkok maybe he would skip the whole Asian swing - cos doesn't being a month stop him from losing points if he does not attend to do promotional duties.

Well I guess you could be right re the promotional stuff and ranking points. I just remember him withdrawing from a 250 event in Marseilles last year under similar circumstances (although it was during his post AO slump).

If he does play then I agree with you about him not maybe giving his all, he'll want to give more of himself in Shanghai

Well information has been known to get deleted from that site.....

P.S. FWIW my take on this is that Andy may have thought about how he has tended to get bad results in first round matches after he has not played for a while and this might be insurance against a first round exit in Tokyo (a 500 event) which would put pressure on in Shanghai. He might just want to play himself in in Asia. Other big names are Soderling Monfils and Simon who will be scrapping for points to qualify for ATP Finals.

Take your point David and Andy may not want to take too long a break , though I think 3 weeks in succession is a tough schedule and he will want to peak at Shanghai. Think he should only play Bangkok if he's feeling fine psychically.

Neil Harman tweeted about it (re-tweet from Soderling) and it's on a couple of other forums.

I agree with David and others. Andy seems to suffer from jet-lag so I see this as a Far-East warm-up opportunity and if he goes deep so be it but if he doesn't he'll just have a bit more time to get to Japan.

Jamie Murray is also down to play Bangkok - again partnering Sa.

    Thanks Sally.

Its going to be difficult doing FTM as it will be tryuihng to forecast how fit Andy will be. He posted on Facebook tht he was doing Bikram yoga yesterday, Friday, which means he is not travelling there very early so he won't have much time to acclimatise.

I guess if he flies out on Saturday that gives him 2/3 days to get over the jetlag before playing a R2 match on Wednesday which ought to be enough. His oppo will have either played one match (Berrer) or 3 (the Qualifier!).

There will probably be a livestream from Wednesday onwards. Tennistv.com have it on their schedule, so I daresay livescorehunter will come up with some too.

These 28 draw tournaments are not necessarily that bad, especially if like Andy you are one of the top four seeds and only have to play a maximum of four best of three set matches. As long as Andy turns up physically and mentally to a reasonable extent, his first two rounds might not be too taxing - say an hour and a bit's work for 6-4 6-3 type results. Then hopefully Simon whom he seems to enjoy playing and then he is close to another tourney win, which is ALWAYS positive methinks, so I do not see too much harm in playing the 250.

Remember some of his early exits and the fact he has not been playing that many minor tourneys actually means that he probably has more energy in the tank than, say, Rafa, who always has wear and tear at this stage in the season (and Nole who with his injury and the matches under his best already this year is saving him self for the last (European) part of the season.). Certainly the Asian swing and the Paris Master's results can often be a reflection of their place in the calendar. Andy has the Shanghai points to defend but these three weeks and the WTF (plus any extras in Paris) could cement the no. 3 ranking as I am not sure Roger will be able to defend his WTF win this year.
